Middlesex finally open account with record run chase

After losing 10 games in a row (15 going back to last season), Middlesex registered their first win of the 2023 T20 Blast by achieving the highest-ever run chase in the tournament's history through a seven-wicket win against Surrey at The Oval on Thursday (June 22). Chasing a mind-boggling target of 253, Middlesex got there with four balls to spare in a game of incredible ball-striking which saw as many as 52 fours and 24 sixes being struck. A majestic 177-run stand between Will Jacks and Laurie Evans set the tone for Surrey who were eyeing a total of 275-plus or beyond at one stage.
Both batters were severe on anything remotely loose and with them at the crease, the score could have been anything. Jacks was on the cusp of hitting six sixes in the 11th over bowled by Luke Hollman but mishit the sixth ball, a full-toss. However, Middlesex managed to pull things back once the partnership was broken with a flurry of wickets towards the back end. While the last 44 balls still produced 75 runs, it was a commendable job given the pitch and dimensions on offer. 253 was still very daunting and a lot had to go right for the visitors to even get close, let alone create history. Skipper Stephen Eskinazi's rollicking fifty gave them hope, as his opening stand with Joe Cracknell gave Middlesex a bit of a platform.
The score after just four overs read 67/0 and it was the sort of start Middlesex needed with both batters smashing any bowler that came at them. Once they fell, the hosts may have fancied a strangle job but Max Holden and Ryan Higgings carried on the onslaught with a 105-run stand off just 46 balls. Even the likes of Sunil Narine and Sam Curran - usually Surrey's go-to bowlers - got belted to all parts of the ground. Chris Jordan was the stand out bowler for Surrey and the skipper fought a lone battle as the others got the stick. Towards the end, it was only about holding their nerves and Middlesex did
